How To Start A Website

Posted on March 3, 2009

Starting your own website can be overwhelming to some.  Luckily, it doesn’t have to be a tough proposition.  The following lists the steps to start a website.

1)  Gather your content.  Marketing collateral such as brochures, flyers and previous ads are a great start.  If you do not have any of these items, don’t panic.  Simply jot down your ideas on a notepad or in Microsoft Word.  The content does not have to be complete at first.  A simple outline is enough to get started.

2)  Develop your message.  You need an over-arching message for your entire site and then a specific message for each product or service you offer.  For example, Sophic’s over-arching message is “market your business online.”  Our search engine marketing service message is “get discovered.”

3)  Evolve your products and services messages into pages.  You might then want to group the pages into categories.  For example, Sophic’s search engine optimization and pay per click services are grouped together under the search engine marketing category.

4)  Look for inspiration.  Find two or three sites that you admire.  Pick out the things that appeal to you and write them down.
